Happy Friday, friends! This will be a weekend of surprises because I'm planning a special day for H's birthday. Maybe I'll even bake a cake. Should I do a hummingbird cake or pineapple upside-down or a banana cake? Suggestions welcome!

Five things I'm lovin' right now ...

As someone who is struggling to find a single home in the greater Los Angeles area that she could even remotely afford, I really shouldn't be looking at Marilyn Monroe's former residence. But it's so gorgeous. I could really see myself curling up in that reading nook and spending the next 50 years in bliss. But back to reality ...

Media Minded: Brand New Walkie-Talkies!

I've been thinking about how quickly things become dated. H dug out our old cellphones the other night, just a quick jaunt down memory lane. Who knows why we keep these things anyway. The first phones date back five or six years, and they are tiny. "These look like toys!" H exclaimed. The second set, slider phones about three years old, are slightly larger. He then put them next to our current qwerty keyboard phones, the largest of the three, to illustrate our Cellphone Evolution. These newest phones are even on the verge of extinction now because they are not touchscreen iPhones.

And when will iPhones give way to the next technology -- and what will it look like? I remember when everyone thought cellphones would just keep getting smaller and smaller. But I think that ship has sailed -- talking or texting on those tiny things required a magnifying glass and an unnaturally sharp fingernail.

Nostalgia time! Check out how far removed we are from the Atari videogames and massive walkie-talkies from 1984 film "Cloak & Dagger" (they just don't make movies like this anymore!).

It makes you wonder how long before the 3D of today looks old school. How long before the high-def videogames of today look like child's play. How long before our iPads look like stone tablets. What do you think? Do you keep up with technology?

Fashion Forward: Coral Jewelry

So you're either in the camp that thinks coral branch jewelry looks like creepy flesh (really Sara?) or you're of the mind that coral jewelry is awesome (that would be me). If you're in the latter camp, check out some of these rad finds from Etsy that make me wish for an endless summer. And a beach bonfire. And a snorkeling adventure. A girl can dream ...

It's hotter than Hades in our apartment this afternoon. So as soon as I post this I am out the door in search of air-conditioned buildings. Then tonight I am going to allow my mind to be blown by "Inception." Don't tell me what it's about! I've managed to avoid all reviews because I want to go in completely blind. And then tomorrow it's the beach. Reading, lounging, soaking the tootsies in the ocean. Oh yes. I hope you have a fantastic weekend planned, too!

This overcast afternoon we headed to the waterfront, where we hopped aboard a sailboat and sat under the jib. In hindsight this might not be the best seat in the house, but we got used to the violent leaning motion of the boat after the first few turns. When we returned to land we chowed down on the best alder planked salmon ever, no lie! Then we made our way over to the Space Needle. The camera decided to die after the first few meager snapshots. All attempts to revive it were futile. (I do have a disposable to develop, though, so hang tight!)

100 Movies: 70, 71

And the countdown continues in my quest to watch and find something inspiring in every single one of Yahoo's 100 Movies to See Before You Die.
Photobucket
Joe Gillis: You're Norma Desmond. You used to be in silent pictures. You used to be big.
Norma Desmond: I *am* big. It's the *pictures* that got small.
Gloria Swanson is a has-been silent screen star who puts her hooks in broke screenwriter William Holden, who is a certifiable douchebag. He essentially becomes a kept man, enjoying his life of luxury, but sneaks out to "write" with another woman. True, living in the decrepit mansion with a delusional actress can be tough, especially with the creeptastic Erich von Stroheim acting as butler. (When you find out he's not only the butler but also Gloria's ex-husband, your skin will crawl.) Still, that's no reason to be sarcastic and bitchy toward the woman who is just trying to get ready for her closeup. Oh, and she has a gun and she's not afraid to shoot. Inspiration? It really is better to be broke than to be dead in your sugar mama's pool.

Photobucket
David St. Hubbins: I do not, for one, think that the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem *may* have been, that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being *crushed* by a *dwarf.* Alright? That tended to understate the hugeness of the object.
Ian Faith: I really think you're just making much too big a thing out of it.
Derek Smalls: Making a big thing out of it would have been a good idea.
How does a heavy metal band with a misplaced umlaut document its U.S. tour of small venues? With a mockumentary, of course! The history of the band is plagued with bad reviews (the album entitled "Shark Sandwich" is panned as "Shit Sandwich") and drummers who die mysterious deaths (spontaneous combustion, choking on someone else's vomit and a "bizarre gardening accident"). The best lesson from this laugh riot is to be precise with your instructions, lest you end up with a tiny stage replica of Stonehenge (in inches instead of feet).

On a whim we drove to Mount Rainier National Park. As we winded through the ever-more-isolated forest roads, it became apparent that we were the unprepared travelers at the beginning of a horror movie. Would we get a flat tire and end up getting beaten with our own lug wrench? Would we get lost during a hike and freeze to death in our sandals?

What happened was we walked through a rainforest and soaked our feet in a canyon stream. A perfectly nonscary outdoors adventure!

I know, normally I have a collage of Flickr finds to share with you, but this one is seriously too cute. So cute it deserves its very own Flickr Fridays post. Click on the photo for photog credit (and for another cute Dreidel photo).

What are your plans this weekend, friends? I have about a gazillion things to do (aren't errands FUN?!) but first I plan to sneak away for some thrifting and lunch with Sara. Anything to get me out of this apartment, which at the moment is a sweltering evil temperature.

Pix-elated!

In case you haven't been over to the photo store lately, I have this new print up for sale. It looks even better in person if you can believe it ... tres dreamy.

I must have a thing for empty benches overlooking misty vistas because this isn't my first such photo. Exhibit A:

On the hottest day of our trip we took refuge in a duck boat, breezing by the biggest tourist attractions and plopping into Lake Union for a midafternoon swim. We then carved out some time to pay our respects to Jimmy Hendrix and Bruce Lee. We were not the only ones traipsing around cemeteries. Turns out these two fellas get quite a few visitors. The gentleman from the 1800s who is buried an arm's length from Bruce Lee must be jealous.

We paid $16 to park downtown. We navigated the narrow halls of Pike Place Market. We walked the steep streets nearby. We took refuge in a tiny gyro shop. A cold beverage never tasted so good.
