Fashion Rewind: Mean Girls

Photobucket

Ahh. Remember when Lindsay Lohan was cute and spunky and not out of her effin' mind? Yes, I'm digging back to 2004 when "Mean Girls" was fetch and there was no such thing as "Mean Girls 2," a horrible movie ABC Family was pushing last weekend.

Now pretend you're in The Plastics clique, beyotch. You wear a lot of pink and do a lot of backstabbing by writing in a Burn Book and you definitely do NOT join the Mathletes. That's like, social suicide. Oh, and whatever you do, don't wear sweatpants on a Monday.

Media Minded: Did You Find What You Came Here For?

Still Life With Fruit
Maybe if someone is searching for "Still Life With Fruit," they'll stumble upon this blog?

I'm not one to check my blog statistics very often. I prefer to pretend like I'm writing to imaginary people, that way I don't overedit myself or worry too much about what I'm saying. Curiosity got the best of me yesterday, though, and I took a peek.

And wow. It appears there are a lot of people on the internets who are searching on Google for The Dude's sweater, 1950s beach babes and starburst mirrors. I can only hope they weren't disappointed when they were steered toward my blog.

I suppose the keywords leading people here could be even more misleading. After all, the fifth highest keyword search was "Little gray pixel." So hopefully you're here on purpose and not because you expected to see Marilyn Monroe in a swimsuit.

The Thriftster: Nursery Decor

Owls! $2

A confession: Ever since I closed the vintage store there have been times when thrifting feels sad to me. I see so many cute clothes that I want to pluck and find a good home for, but that's a thing of the past. I've instead been occupying my thrift time looking for things for the baby and for H (he's got a Lacoste fetish that you must see to believe ... but I digress). I've had varying degrees of success with finding suitable baby stuff at the thrifts. Most of the time things are really disgusting (read: stained) or unusable (read: broken). My biggest coup up until a few days ago was a new-in-the-box Pack N Play for $20. Score!

A few days ago I found a few knickknacks for the nursery that really upped the cuteness factor in there. The teeny tiny owls above were 99 cents a piece. I was pleased enough with the owls because owls are the nursery theme, plus the damn popular things are such a rarity in the thrifts nowadays. But as I was exiting the store I spied these in a window display:

Unicorns! $6

Unicorn bookends -- for $3 a piece! Can I tell you how much I loved unicorns when I was a young girl? I would bawl at the beginning of the movie "Legend" when they cut off a unicorn's horn. My favorite cartoon was "The Last Unicorn." I would give unicorns to my non-unicorn-loving relatives for Christmas. Apparently I'm still doing this, only now I'm inflicting them on my unborn child.*

*But seriously, how could she not love unicorns!?

Baby Talk

39 Weeks
39 weeks!

Dear Baby,

The doctors are saying you are about 8 pounds 10 ounces. I saw a glimpse of your cute chubby cheeks and dazzling smile on ultrasound last week, and it blows my mind that within the next several days we will meet face to face. As much as I'm ready to hold you in my arms and put the uncomfortable waddling behind me, there are a few things about your fetal personality that I want to always remember. I want to remember how you are always wide awake between the hours of 9 p.m. and midnight, my little night owl. You also kick me awake every morning at 5:30, just about the time Daddy wakes up to go to work. I love how, if I'm ever concerned that you're being too quiet, I can wake you up by sipping a little bit of Coke Zero. But don't get too cozy in the womb, little one. You are coming out soon!

Xoxox,
Mommy

Fashion Forward: Color Blocking

I'm going to admit that I'm a little nervous that I don't have a set of blocks for the baby yet. It's not like she's going to hop out of the womb, inspect the nursery and start screaming if she doesn't find the perfect set of vintage alphabet blocks spelled out in her name, I know, but still it's something that's been on my nesting mind.

So it should come as no surprise that the clothes catching my eye have color blocks in common. It started with the Jil Sander dress below. Oh, to be a waif with an extreme haircut who also has a hugely disposable income with which to purchase Jil Sander dresses.

Alas, I have found other gems more in line with most budgets. Behold:

Happy Friday, friends! What are your plans for the weekend?

Today I'm going to take care of business, in particular the business of filing all these damn forms for maternity leave. Then I'm going to pack that bag for the hospital because tomorrow marks week 39! It's getting real now. Really real.

Photoshoot: Nursery

We're getting close to finishing the nursery. It's been an ongoing project now for several months, but I'm finally getting to the point of (near) satisfaction with it. We rent, so we had a few things to work with: green paint on the walls (which I happen to love) and already-there shelving (which comes in handy even though a few of the shelves bow).

Thinking we would get more mileage out of a glider if it were in the living room, we brought one of our leather chairs into the nursery. The rug is from IKEA, as is the side table. The "You Are My Sunshine" print on the left side of the photo is from Sparkle Power.

The pompom mobile is from My Silly Bear and the owl print is from Oh Louise Designs.

The baby already has tons of little stuffed wonders, including the soft, floppy pink beast on the left from her Uncle Chad and the penguin and owl in the middle from Sara. The owl is from Adventure Cubs (and the other owl hidden behind is from Bird Mafia). The polka dot bedding is from DwellStudio for Target.

Set of prints on wood from Petit Collage.

Did you guess the theme of the nursery yet? Owls, baby! These owls happen to come from Urban Outfitters. Oh, and no nursery post would be complete without a shot of the baby's growing shoe collection. She also has more clothes than her mama. No joke.

Happy Friday, friends! It's 2:44 p.m. and I'm still wearing my pajamas. At first I felt guilty about this but then I realized that in just a few short weeks I'll be a mama and will no longer have the luxury of being a lazy bum. The rest of the weekend I plan to enjoy the beautiful weather here in L.A., take in a 3D movie, go on long walks and drink lots of red raspberry leaf tea. Don't worry, there is no castor oil in the forecast.

Fashion Forward: Striped Scarves

Photobucket

A few weeks ago I was in an Ann Taylor Loft store and was drawn like a magnet to this scarf. The colors worked perfectly with my skin tone. It was like it was meant for me. But then, after five minutes of wearing it, I started to feel flush. I've always run a little hot, but now that there's a proverbial bun in the oven I'm constantly at 350 degrees. As much as it pained me to do so, I put it back on a mannequin and walked out scarfless.

But since then I've been noticing striped scarfs everywhere. It's like they are taunting me. After the baby is born one of them will be mine. Oh yes, one will be mine.

The Get Up Kids

Can I tell you how excited I am that two of my favorite bands are on track for awesome releases in the next few months? I must be living under a rock (which I've already pretty much admitted), but it came as a big shock to me that The Get Up Kids were back together and working on a new album, "There Are Rules," to be released Jan. 25. Well, I quickly picked my jaw off the floor and have been listening to a few of the tracks off the album nonstop. They. Are. Good. And you can download "Shatter Your Lungs" for free.

And finally The Strokes have set March as the month they will finally release No. 4, which apparently soundwise falls between Nos. 2 and 3. Whatever. It's been five years since their last album. At this point I'd be happy with an EP.

I've been having really vivid dreams lately. Last night I dreamt that H and I were staying in this mansion and for some reason we were really worried that the lady of the house would find us sleeping in the same room because she had placed us in separate rooms ... even though we are married. I never said these dreams made any sense. Maybe sometime I will tell you about the dream in which I gave birth to a tadpole. Or not.

Happy Friday, friends! What's in store for the weekend? Over here there is more nesting to be done -- perhaps even finishing up the nursery (gasp!) -- and we're making a dry run to the hospital so H will know where he's going and so I don't have to grunt directions while I'm in labor.

Photoshoot: Rainy + Sunny

It Never Rains in Southern California
Mirror Image

These two images came out of my last batch of photos, and I had to share because they remind me that every few years there is a spell of rainy weather in Los Angeles that doesn't seem to go away. And every few years I'm reminded that I do not have the appropriate footwear for these deluges. Too many suede shoes, too many peep-toes, too many flip-flops. But then the skies clear and the air is so clean you can see for miles and miles. And you realize all that moisture was worth it! Until the smog returns, that is.

Baby Talk

Christmas Eve 2010
We <3 You // Christmas Eve 2010

Dear Baby,

It's time for our 36-week checkup tomorrow. That means we're in the final month. When will you make your appearance? Everyone has their own guess. I'm hoping you wait till Daddy does a load of your laundry first. I will be taking several sizes of clothes to the hospital with me because we're not sure how big you're going to be. Between you and me, let's keep it a manageable size (you know, for the sake of Mommy's privates).

I can feel you rolling around and kicking all of the time now. You are in the head-down position so when I feel your little hands moving around I imagine you are practicing to do a handstand. You get the hiccups a few times a day, which is so cute I can hardly stand it.

We are getting so excited to meet you.

XOXO,
Mommy

Fashion Forward: I Heart Amethyst

Photobucket

Now that we're in the final month of this pregnancy we're starting to take bets on when the baby will make her entrance. I have a gut feeling it will be during week 38, but part of me wants the little one to hold on till just a few days after her due date so we can share the same birthstone: amethyst. I've always loved the purple tone of this gem; in fact it reminds me of the day my mother took me to get my ears pierced. I was 12 and had a rather unfortunate tight spiral perm but was otherwise a smart kid because I picked out some amethyst studs to grace my earlobes. How awesome it would be if my little girl and I got to share the same day, with her picking out a similar pair of amethyst studs.*

*Although garnet studs would be mighty fine, too.

P.S. H, any of the above pieces of jewelry would make for a great birthday present for yours truly. *Cough, cough*
