L.A. Love Letters: 500 Days of Summer

Sometimes I get really caught up in the grime and traffic and the headaches of living in this monster city, with its major sprawl and endless stream of incompetent drivers. And then I see or hear something that reminds me of the good things. This series is my love letter to Los Angeles.

Dear Los Angeles,

Remember how pretty you looked in "500 Days of Summer"? I'd like to see more of that. Less dust on my windshield, more pretty. Also, more spontaneous dance. But I'd settle for a clean sidewalk.

This movie makes your downtown look absolutely sparkling. And it is. There are gorgeous areas there, in between the $10-, $15-, $20-per-day parking lots and homeless people sleeping in piles of urine. And the architecture is nice (besides the L.A. Live addition, that thing looks like a coffin).

I do love your tree-lined streets. They are gorgeous, especially the ones filled with jacarandas that bloom and bleed purple each spring. And it's pretty cool how people ride their beach cruisers everywhere, just as long as they are courteous and stay in the bicycle lanes (1 in 5 L.A. bicyclists do not value their lives, based on my own observational research).

Remember in the movie how it's fall and people are at the park, lying on the grass. That. That is why I love you.

Plus looking at this skyline as I near the 10 and 110 intersection on my way home from work, the evening sun hitting the buildings just so. Oh, you cut right to my core with that jazz.

Love,
LGP

  1. Even after being born in Southern CA and visiting every summer, I have NEVER seen LA has beautiful as in 500 Days of Summer. Maybe next time we're out (in two weeks) you can give us a mini-tour of your faves?

I think I am one of the few people who simply and unabashedly love nearly everything about L.A. I've never enjoyed living anywhere as much as I do here.

  3. Now you're just making me look like an asshole. :-)
Seriously, I've never lived anywhere with better weather. The cost of living can kiss my butt, though.

  5. I chuckled a little when you mentioned "more spontaneous dance." Yeah,
it was a perfect LA setting in the movie, kinda like the best we've
seen. I'd like to experience this perfect setting myself.
